Fact of the Day. Why it’s important to drink water for weight maintenance

Drinking enough water is not only the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, but also an important factor in maintaining an optimal weight. Water plays a key role in a number of body processes, and its impact on metabolism and appetite control should not be underestimated.

Metabolic acceleration: Studies show that water can temporarily speed up metabolism. One study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that after consuming 500 ml of water, the metabolic rate increases by 30% within 30-40 minutes. This is because the body uses energy to heat the water to body temperature, which helps burn calories.

Appetite control: Water helps control appetite by filling the stomach and creating a feeling of satiety. Often, feelings of thirst can be confused with feelings of hunger, and in such cases, a person may eat extra calories instead of just drinking a glass of water. A study conducted by scientists from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University found that people who drank two glasses of water before a meal consumed an average of 75-90 fewer calories during the meal.

Supporting body functions: Water is essential for the proper functioning of all body systems, including the digestive system, which is directly linked to weight control. Water helps maintain normal bowel function by preventing constipation and improving nutrient absorption. Adequate water intake also aids in the elimination of toxins, which is important for maintaining health and energy.

Recommendations: Doctors recommend drinking about 2-3 liters of water per day, depending on the level of physical activity, climate and individual body needs. For those who are active in sports or live in hot climates, water requirements may be higher.

Maintaining water balance is a simple but effective way to speed up your metabolism, control your appetite and ultimately maintain or lose weight. It is important to remember that water is a basic element of a healthy lifestyle and its consumption should be a priority for anyone concerned about their health and figure.
